Last night’s affair at the Allianz arena saw PSG qualify for the final of the Champions League for the second year in a row. They will face Arsenal in Budapest on the 30th of May, in what could be a chance to complete a historic back-to-back victory. Let’s have a look at some of the positives and negatives from last night’s game.
Here are four positives and one negative following Paris Saint-Germain's glorious Champions League night against Bayern Munich.
Four positives and one negative as PSG qualified for back-to-back Champions League final
Positive #1: Excellent PSG game management evidenced once again by highly mature PSG performance.
Most people going into last night’s second-leg would perhaps have anticipated a high scoring shoot-out in the mould of the first-leg, but in fact what we in fact saw was a more disciplined game in which PSG’s maturity and game management was evidenced by the way they went about things. PSG’s early goal meant that they established a two-goal cushion, and they managed the game brilliantly in order to foil their Bavarian hosts. It was another demonstration of just how mature this PSG side has become.
Positive #2: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé shine once again on Champions League night
PSG’s star attackers have always showed up when it really matters in the Champions League over the last couple of seasons, and last night was no exception. Yet another important goal for Dembélé (who now has five in his last three Champions League games), a brilliant assist for Kvaratskhelia and a fantastic all around performance from Desiré Doué, who tormented the Bayern backline with his dribbling, almost scoring a sensational solo goal in the second half with a bold run from deep within his own half of the pitch. Arsenal’s defenders will certainly not be looking forwards to facing this front three in such red hot form.
Positive #3: Willian Pacho back to his very best: a transformative signing made by Enrique
Keeping this Bayern attack at check for 90 minutes of normal time is no mean feat, especially at the Allianz arena, and overall PSG’s defence was impeccable in the way they dealt with the various threats that spearhead the German side. One man, however, whose individual performances should be highlighted is Willian Pacho. Since the Ecuadorian has become a part of PSG’s starting XI on a consistent basis, the Parisians have reached back to back Champions League finals, with Pacho displaying yet another excellent indivudal performance last night.
Positive #4: Warren Zaire-Emery in such good form that he’s starting to become a selection headache.
In the enforced absence of Achraf Hakimi last night, Zaire-Emery once again put up an outstanding individual performance: the young Frenchman didn’t look out of place at all in this PSG XI and caused Bayern problems, both defensively and going forwards. Should Hakimi be back in time for the final, it’s going to create a headache for Luis Enrique, who surely must feel that Zaire-Emery’s exceptional season should be rewarded with a start on the biggest stage. Let’s see, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on.
Negative #1: Shame to lose clean sheet right at the death.
It feels absurd to even choose a negative on such a fantastic occasion for the club, but fans of PSG will be slightly disappointed at Harry Kane’s late goals which meant PSG only drew on the night, and that what would have been a brilliant clean sheet evaporated right at the death. It’s hardly anything overly serious, and neither fans nor players will lose any sleep over it, though.
