Despite the club's long injury crisis, some players stepped up and earned more minutes such as Kang-In Lee and Warren Zaire-Emery, while others failed to take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen their place in the squad. As a result, they now appear surplus to requirements.
3 PSG players who are now expendable
Matvey Safonov
Since the arrival of Lucas Chevalier at the club Matvey Safonov's playing time with PSG have dramatically plummeted. Last season, during his first season at the club, the Russia international was able to show himself on the pitch, in domestic competitions where he played every game of the Coupe de France, while also featuring in the Champions League in the loss against Bayern Munich.
However, Gianluigi Donnarumma remained the number one option for Luis Enrique when it came to big games, which brought tremendous success to the club. This season, however, with no opportunity to play behind Chevalier (despite some costly) combined with the arrival of Renato Marin at the club, the position of Safonov at the club could very soon be in jeopardy with rumours of a departure already emerging from several sources.
Lucas Beraldo
The Brazil international joined the club in January 2024, and was expected to become Marquinhos' partner in the heart of PSG's backline after gaining some valuable experience in Europe. However, Willian Pacho joined the club at the start of last season, and became a key element of their treble-winning campaign.
Additionally, Illia Zabarnyi joined from Bournemouth in the summer, adding another rival for the centre-back position. Therefore, the 22-year-old became a rotation player, mostly playing in domestic games when Pacho is given a rest.
Looking to improve his chances to feature at the upcoming World Cup with Brazil, the former FC São Paulo player might be tempted to leave the club in the winter transfer window, with links to several clubs already made, including Chelsea and OGC Nice.
Gonçalo Ramos
The European Champions went through a very difficult period with several key offensive players going down injured, which was mostly due to the intense calendar of the club. With Ousmane Dembélé injured, the one set to lead the front line should have been Gonçalo Ramos and the Portuguese did at the beginning but only started domestic games.
Meanwhile, Luis Enrique gave his trust to Senny Mayulu when it came to Champions League with much success, whereas the former Benfica player struggled to get off the mark. While the team lacks a real number nine, the Spaniard coach proved that he was able to do without him at numerous opportunities despite his ability to score off the bench.
