Luis Enrique and PSG prepare to face AS Monaco in the first-leg of the Champions League Play-offs and bounced back from their frustrating 3-1 loss at the hands of Rennes this Friday.
The Spaniard and his team failed to score on their big chances and were ultimately punished by a remarkable and well-organised Rennes side that were saved by many crucial saves from their keeper Brice Samba.
Here are the three key talking points ahead of the Champions League Play-offs clash between PSG and AS Monaco.
Three main talking points before PSG vs AS Monaco
1) Bring back the collective at the forefront of the team
What made of this team one of the most dominant in Europe last season was undeniably their strong collective, with players running for each other and putting the success of the team or the club before any of their personal achievements. Luis Enrique made sure that any players not fitting into this mold would be cast away from the team like he did for Ousmane Dembélé ahead of a crucial Champions League away clash against Arsenal last year.
Following their impressive 5-0 win against their rivals Marseille in Le Classique, many thought that the team had turned a corner. However, the worrying 3-1 loss against Rennes at the Roazhon Park had proved that the team still had a long way to go to find their best selves once again.
After the game, Ousmane Dembélé shared his frustration about some of his teammates' selfish behaviours and showcased some tensions within the squad which is worrying ahead of the Champions League Play-offs clash against Monaco.
2) Score on their big chances
The team has had tremendous difficulties when it came to convert their chances since the beginning of the year and it became even more blatant against Rennes when they scored only once despite numerous clear cut chances.
The team had been able to showcased perfectly the qualities of many goalkeeper in Europe and domestically when failling to score which in return cost them dearly as they failed to clinch their spot in the top 8 of the Champions League while falling to second place in Ligue 1.
To reach the same level as last season, Luis Enriqe and his team will need to be more lethal in front of goal, starting against Monaco on Tuesday.
3) Show the same attitude than against Marseille
The game against Marseille was set to be a turning point for this PSG team and it seemed like it was when they easily dominated their rivals 5-0 at the Parc des Princes. Following the game, Ousmane Dembélé declared that the team had a message to deliver and it seems like they did ahead of their trip to the Roazhon Park to face Rennes.
However, they showed the complete opposite in a worrying display as they fell in Brittany. To hope to qualify for the next round of the competition and defend their European crown, they will need to show the same display in the first-leg against Monaco.
